Apple OS X 10.7 Lion's Mission Control incorporates the old Spaces technology in a much easier-to-manage way. You add an additional desktop by moving the cursor into the upper-right corner; a tab appears with a plus sign, and a new desktop gets created. Lion won't let you assign a name to each desktop, but I would guess that third-party apps will offer that capability before too long.
To give each desktop a new background, make sure that System Preferences is closed, then navigate to the desktop whose background you want to change, either by using Mission Control or with a three-finger swipe on the trackpad. When you arrive at the desktop you want to change, then open System Preferences, go to the Desktop pane, and assign the new background.
Alternatively, if System Preferences is already open in Desktop 1, and you want to assign a new background to Desktop 2, then use Mission Control to drag System Preferences to Desktop 2, and then, when you go to Desktop 2, you can use System Preferences to set a background for that desktop. Bonus tip for users of earlier OS X versions: A third-party app called Hyperspaces (www.thecocoabots.com) gives users of OS X 10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard some of the same features built into Lion's Mission Control. For example, Hyperspaces allows you choose separate backgrounds for each virtual desktop and it one-ups Lion by letting you assign a name to each desktop. Unfortunately, thanks to the deep changes that Apple made in OS X, Hyperspaces won't be updated for Lion. So named desktops will have to come from some other developer.
